Settings necessary to run a Tor relay on Debian.

Packages

There is just one package that needs to be installed for Tor: %CODE{"sh"}% aptitude install tor %ENDCODE% To make sure that the time on the server is correct, it is advised to sync the clock to some external source like NTP: %CODE{"sh"}% aptitude install ntp %ENDCODE%

Configuration

Modify the following settings in /etc/tor/torrc:

Key	Value	Description
SocksPort	0	Set this to 0 to disable local connections to the Tor server. Can be set to any other available port to enable if necessary.
DataDirectory	/var/lib/tor	This ist the default directory for the Debian Tor package.
Nickname	FladiAT	This can be set to any name.
Address	<server>.fladi.at	The primary FQDN of your server.
RelayBandwidthRate	512 KBytes	Limit relay bandwidth to this value.
RelayBandwidthBurst	1024 KBytes	Limit burst bandwidth to this value.
ContactInfo	1024D/314C5066 Fladischer Michael	Contact information of the sysop running the Tor server.
ORPort	9001	Port which is advertised for Tor relay connections.
DirPort	9030	Port for directory connections. Can be removed from configuration if there is not enough bandwidth.

Running the server

Just restart the service: %CODE{"sh"}% /etc/init.d/tor restart %ENDCODE%

Verification

Make sure that the server runs fine and is able to connect to the Tor network by checking the log file /var/log/tor/log for this lines:

Self-testing indicates your ORPort is reachable from the outside. Excellent. Publishing server descriptor.
Tor has successfully opened a circuit. Looks like client functionality is working.
Self-testing indicates your DirPort is reachable from the outside. Excellent.
Performing bandwidth self-test...done.

If those lines are absent in your log even 20 minutes after your last restart of the Tor service, check your firewall if all ports (9001 and 9030) are open and if DNS name-resolution is working.
